Printing at home was not a trend of the 90s since we used inkjet printers which were expensive and bulky. Refilling cartridges was costly and required a lot of effort from the user. Moreover, these printers needed to be kept in use to ensure the ink in the cartridge is fluid and hasn’t dried out. That’s where printers like Canon Pixma G2012 and G2010 excel, let’s get into the printer review.

Technological advancement led to the creation of ink tank printers which are compact and cost-effective. It uses ink reservoirs plus cartridge setup instead of conventional cartridge-only setup which makes refilling cheap and easy. Ink tank printers are capable of going up to 15-20 days without a print without making the ink dry out. Utilizing this technology, Canon has introduced Pixma G2012 and G2010 two similar ink-efficient compact home printers. In this article, we will see the Canon Pixma G2012 and G2010 ink tank printer review, discussing all of its features and negative aspects.

Integrated Tank System
Integrated Tank System Canon

Canon Pixma G2012 and G2010 come with a lot of cool features and cutting-edge technologies. These are all-in-one printers, which means, these devices have inbuilt print, scan, and copy options. The manufacturer of these printers has put special attention to ensure the best experience for their users.  For example, the integrated transparent ink tank system, it solves the ink level visibility issue. This makes it easy for users to monitor ink levels and plan refills accordingly. Both of these printers offer a 1-year or 15000 pages warranty (whichever is earlier). Installation is free of cost for the customers.

Features

Ink Consumption

The Pixma G2012 and G2010 printers have a very low cost per print.

  • Monochrome (B/W) – 8 Paise per page
  • Color prints – 21 Paise per page.

This makes Pixma G2012 and G2010 an affordable option for both small and medium printing requirements (more than 300 pages per month). They come with a pack of four spill-free ink bottles of colours Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black. Also, they have included an extra bottle of black colour. LCD Screen Canon

Pixma G2012 with dimensions 33 x 44.5 x 16.3 centimetres is a compact printer that can be placed at the corner of the room. Weighing 6 kg, this printer is easy to move as needed. It has a 1.2-inch LCD screen, which gives the user a better understanding of printing progress.

Compatibility

Both Pixma G2012 and G2010 are compatible with Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows XP, and Windows Vista. They are not compatible with macOS, so if you have an Apple device consider other options. (Like EPSON L130)

Print And Scan Properties

Both Pixma G2012 and G2010 support A4, A5, B5, Letter and Legal paper sizes. They can print at a rate of 8.8 pages per minute (according to ISO standards). Print resolution for each print can be set up to 4800 x 1200 dpi, which means you get clean, non-pixelated prints of your photographs. These devices can print stunning borderless flyers in A4 pages. They can process up to 250 GSM paper. Tip: To make your prints bright, sharp, and cost-effective, you may try genuine canon consumables – Canon ink bottles and Canon paper.

Both these printers have a CIS Flatbed scanner with an optical resolution of 600 x 1200dpi.

Power consumption

Both Pixma G2012 and G2010 have low power consumption, they only consume 90 watts while they are operating. In other words, Pixma G2012 and G2010 can work even in a battery inverter.

Areas of Improvement

  • Support with Apple products: Both Pixma G2012 and G2010 is not compatible with Macintosh products.
  • No Wireless printing: Unlike many other printers in the affordable-printing segment, Pixma G2012 and G2010 do not offer wireless printing.
  • Printer noise: These printers can become noisy while they are operating (38~53dB) especially in a quiet room.
  • No automatic duplex: Automatic two-sided printing is not available.

Verdict

Canon’s Pixma G2012 and G2010 are two budget-friendly options suitable for both home and business users. If you can sacrifice wireless printing for a cheaper price, this would be one of the cheapest all-in-one ink tank printers available in the current marketplace.

I love computer devices of all kinds! I am particularly interested in productivity devices such as printers. I remember my first printer back in 2008, which was an awesome experience for me. I learned a lot of things after that experience. I intend to share my experience through this blog. That way I can make others understand the nuances and help them to make the right purchase decision.

Hello John, this is a nice review. Can you tell some differences between these two printers?

    1. John M

      Hi Niranjan,
There are very minor differences between these two printers. Among those, the only notable difference is between their firmware. Canon G2012 (product link) has the latest version of firmware and Canon G2010 (Product link) has the older version. Customers have also reported a slight improvement in the page yield, apart from these both are pretty much the same. In my opinion, buy whichever is available for a cheap rate.
      Thank you for commenting.

  2. sachin

hi. do I need to use original ink to refill tanks.?

    1. John M

      Hi Sachin,

We would suggest you to use original ink rather than 3rd party inks. We say this because original inks somewhat ensure the higher life span of the print head and better print quality.

      Regards
      John

  3. SUSHANTA PAUL

don’t understand the difference in between G2010 AND G2012, PLEASE CLEAR THE DIFFERENCE in between two.

    1. John M

      Hi Sushanta,

Basically they are the same but has some minor firmware updates. It is speculated that the print efficiency might be a bit high in G2012 due to this updated software. Apart from that, they both are the same.

  4. Jain

Your answer seems right and best.

  5. Suresh

These both r connected to android phone

    1. John M

      Hi Suresh,

No, these are not wireless printers. You can access these printers only using USB connectivity. If you are looking for the wireless variant of these printers check our review on Canon G3000 series review

  6. BASANTA KUMAR

Can I print through otg cable with smartphone??

    1. John M

      Hi Basanta,

It’s a difficult question to answer. OTG printing is supported in this printer, but some mobiles require some additional settings change to turn ON this feature.

Normally you need an OTG cable like this and an app like PrinterShare or NokoPrint. After connecting the cable to the mobile give print command from the app.

  7. Robert

Hello! Does this use pigment type ink for colors? This is currently my first choice for a home 3-in-1 printer that I could also use for printing photos or stickers.

    1. John M

These are dye-based ink printers. These printers are suitable for printing images and sticklers.

PS: All printers in this price range use dye-based ink.

  8. Rajesh Kumar

    Purchased it on 2020-08-09
The output is not so good for pictures.

    1. John M

      Hi Rajesh,

That’s very unfortunate. Did you pick the best quality in the print settings? Did you use glossy paper to print? Do you mind sharing the scanned copy of the printout? It’d be helpful for many.

  9. Sachin

What’s the actual page yeild ?

    1. John M

If you have a lot of photos to print, the page yield will be lesser than 1000. If you have a medium print requirement, you can expect anywhere between 2,000 to 3,000 prints.
