Epson L3152 and Brother DCP-T510W are two of the popular printers in the “Rs. 10,000+” category. Both these printers have made millions for their manufacturers. Today we will compare these two printers and find if they are fit for your needs.

Note: Epson L3150, L3151 and L3152 are very similar printers having a similar set of features. Theoretically, you can use this same article to compare Epson L3150/L3151 and Brother DCP-T510W printers.

Design

In this fast-paced world, the visual appeal has become one of the important aspects of an electronic gadget, and printers are no exception. Printer manufacturers have derived their own equations from combining both technical and aesthetic features to their products. Some are doing decent jobs at it, others are still perfecting their design.

  • Brother has created their own style while making their printers, which helped their customers to identify Brother printers pretty quickly. In the case of Brother DCP-T510W printer, that unique design has made this printer bulk in size. Both its dimensions and weight is comparatively more. Apart from the lack of compactness, the printer is aesthetically very good looking.
  • Epson also has a way of designing their printers, and I believe they have perfected their craft. Epson L3152 is a compact printer compared to Brother DCP-T510W. The weight and size of this printer is significantly less, and it is good looking too.

Print, Scan and Copy Features

Both of these are all in one printers having features like printing, scanning and copying. The only difference is their performance levels. Let’s analyze each printer.

  • Epson L3152 printer is a multifunction printer. The page yield of this printer is around 5,000 pages for black and white printing and 6,500 pages for colour printing. This printer has a printing cost of about 7 paise for black and white printing and 18 paise for colour printing. The print speed of this printer according to the ISO standards are 10 ipm for black and white printing and 5 ipm for colour printing. The ideal monthly duty cycle of this printer is up to 300-500 prints, but this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t print more than 500 print outs. Epson L3152 can’t handle sheets above 180 GSM. And this printer only has a manual duplex printing option. At a time, this printer can hold up to 100 sheets in its tray.
  • Brother DCP-T510W printer is also a multifunction printer having the same set of features as the L3152. This printer has a page yield of 4,500 pages for black and white printing and 7,500 pages for colour printing. The cost per print for this printer is around 8 paise per page for black and white prints and 26 paise per page for colour printing. This Brother printer has a page speed of 6 ipm for colour prints and 12 ipm for black and white prints. The prefered duty cycle is 300-500 prints per month. The maximum paper thickness this printer handles is up to 220 GSM. This printer also does not have auto-duplex printing, only the manual option is available. The input paper tray in this printer can hold up to 150 pages.

Ink Tank Features

Both Epson L3152 and Brother DCP-T510W are ink tank printers. They both have transparent ink tanks to help users monitor the ink levels easily. The original set of ink bottles cost around Rs. 2,000 for each printer. It is not recommended to use third-party inks due to the chances of damaging the print head. Below you can check out the link for original ink bottles of these printers:

Wireless Connectivity Features

In this day and age of portable devices, the wireless option has become one of the most important features in electronic devices. In the case of printers, wireless connectivity opens many new possibilities for the user. Both these printers have wireless options. Brother DCP-T510W supports both Google Cloud Print and Apple AirPrint options. But the Epson L3152 printer does not work with AirPrint, it has only the Google Cloud Print service available. So if you are an Apple user, maybe you should go with the former one.

Apart from third-party apps, we can also use manufacturer’s apps. For Epson, it is Epson iPrint, and for Brother, it is Brother iPrint&Scan.

User Interface

The UI of these two printers are fundamentally different because of the options provided by each manufacturer.

Epson L3152 printer has the least user-friendly UI. It does not even have a display. The user has to rely on LEDs and themselves to figure out what the printer has to say to us. That’s some 2010’s technology. Even the switch interface is limited compared to its competitors.

Brother DCP-T510W, compared to the other printer, is clearly more user friendly. This printer has a segmented display which can display things such as print progress, error codes, etc. The number of control buttons is also higher in this brother printer.

OS Support and Warranty

Epson L3152 supports both Windows OS and Mac OS. But there have been some reports about a compatibility issue with Mac installed devices for Epson L3150 printer (the predecessor of L3152). While the manufacturer ensures smooth working, this might be an issue if you are using devices that have Mac OS. This printer has warranty coverage of up to 1 year or 30,000 prints, whichever comes first.

Brother DCP-T510W supports Windows OS, Mac OS and Linux. Brother is famous for its compatibility with the Linux operating system, so if you have a device with Linux OS, this would be a perfect fit. Warranty is the same as above: coverage of up to one year or 30,000 prints, whichever comes first.

Pros of Epson L3152
  • Multifunction printer
  • WiFi enabled
  • Supports Google Cloud Print
  • High page yield
Pros of Brother DCP-T510W
  • Multifunction printer
  • Paper support only up to 220 GSM
  • Segmented display
  • WiFi enabled

Conclusion

To conclude, both printers have certain strong points. Still, all in all, Brother DCP-T510W printer is clearly better and user friendly compared to Epson L3152 or L3150 printer.

I love computer devices of all kinds! I am particularly interested in productivity devices such as printers. I remember my first printer back in 2008, which was an awesome experience for me. I learned a lot of things after that experience. I intend to share my experience through this blog. That way I can make others understand the nuances and help them to make the right purchase decision.

    Hi John,

I need to buy a printer for my home use and I am bit confused between HP 415 Ink Tank, Epson L3152 and Brother DCP-T510W . All are around same price range and seems to offer more or less same features. Can you please suggest me on the same. Also it seems that only Epson provide onsite warranty and other (HP and Brother) does not. Please guide which company is better in terms of customer services in case any fault arises post purchase.

    Thank you
    Manoj Jain

      Hi Manoj,

If you’re concerned about service availability, I’d suggest HP printers since they have a great customer support all over India. Performance-wise, I’d go with the Brother printer. If you still want to buy other printers, I’d suggest looking into Onsite Warranty service.

    Thanks John,

    Your inputs are very helpful.
I have one query between HP 419 and Epson L3152. I had reached sales and service store and asked for information, during that I had asked what will be common issues in ink tank printer, they responded as printer head is the most common issue, for that I asked what would be cost of printer head for model HP 419 and Epson L3152. The response is approximately Rs. 1800 and Rs. 4105 respectively. Now actual confusion started with which one I need to go with as they are in same price range but there is lot of variation in head cost . Not sure about the quality , performance and life of head in both HP 419 and Epson L3152. could you please provide your inputs and suggest which one I can pick.
Could you please provide you inputs and suggest which one I can buy.

Any printer within this price range from any brand and model is also ok for me,pleasd suggest.

    Thanks in advance.
    Sri

    1. John M

      Hi Sri,

From what I gather, the difference might be due to the import tax (both of them are imported) and the patented print head technology of Epson. I’d still suggest you to go with HP 415/419 since they have very similar lifetime and performance. Or if you are still interested to buy Epson printer I’d suggest you to look into OnsiteGO extended warranty service which includes free replacement of print heads up to 2 years + the manufacturer’s warranty.

  3. Arun

What is the cost of print head replacement for Brother.
And if it is higher than HP’s Rs 1700, then would you recommend HP over Brother. What else does Brother has (maybe even better quality of print for ex, or higher number of pages per ink volume). Kindly suggest.

    1. John M

      Hi Arun,

Brother print head cost is higher. Brother try to include more features for certain price ranges (T710W). If you’re concerned about part replacements, HP is your best right now. Their print head is the cheapest in the whole market. Other factors are almost similar because all of them are using the same technique of printing.

  4. Anshum

    Hello John,

Yours seems to be the only resource on Printers, Compliments for that. Must say it’s quite a work and repository.

A lot of people have asked this question so this might be repeated, kindly bear with that.

    1. Primary Requirement: School Assignments.
    2. Secondary Requirement: High Quality Color Prints.
Must Features: All in One, Color, Wifi
Good to Have: ADF, Duplex is a big plus.
Contenders: Epson 3150 (3152 is out of stock), Brother 710- higher price but justified with ADF, HP 510. Canon ruled out due to performance issues, else I guess it would be best for Pictures.

Brother- Is the print Quality really Bad? A deal breaker? Is it comparable to HP? Which one is the best? Epson>>HP>>Brother?

My preference with features is Brother>HP>Epson.

With Quality and Form Factor >>Epson>>HP>>Brother.

    What is your suggestion?

I am fine with Brother if B&W and Color quality is fine. If not, then will probably settle for Epson and compromise on ADF/Duplex Printing. Primarily confusion is between Epson and Brother. Much appreciate your help.

    1. John M

      Hi Anshum,

Epson and Brother use the same variant of ink tank technology in their printers (HP and Canon use a slightly different variant). Performance-wise both of them are similar, and the print quality will be mostly identical unless you are using a glossy paper. I really like Brother because they provide the most value for the money we spent (ex: T710W). Epson isn’t bad, but in comparison with Brother, I’ll choose Brother.

Due to the differences in the technology used, print heads are cheaper with HP printers. Quality-wise they all of these printers are very similar. Another advantage HP has is their customer support. Nationwide service centres and an active online store for the printer and consumables.

      1. Lesley Foster

Sorry Sir Brother gives out the best quality if compared with hp epson canon etc…

  5. Anshum

    Thanks John,

Specific to HP, with Wireless Multi Function color printer, options are Ink Tank 315, 515 and 530.

I can’t even figure out any difference between 315, 410,419 and 515 !! Price difference is significant- 10K to 15K.

What is the recommend model here? Between 315 410, 419 and 515?

With ADF, 530 is the only option. What is the suggestion between HP 530 and Brother T710, feature wise seem similar.

Looks like my final comparison is between 419, 515 and 530. How successful is ADF in such printer range? And that too without auto duplex.

    Thanks for all your help.

    1. John M

      Hi there again,

For the first question, I will recommend HP 410 series. Even though HP 515 is a modified version, we need to wait a bit more to find out if it’s actually worth it or not. Difference between HP 310 series and 410 series is the WiFi connectivity.

The second question; Brother DCP T710W is definitely a better choice here. Even if we took the maintenance cost, it wouldn’t match the price of HP 530. Or if you want a Bluetooth printer, you should go with 530.

ADF is slow in all of these printers; it always is. If you don’t require legal paper scanning maybe you should just stick with HP 419.

  6. Lesley Foster

Sorry Sir Brother gives out the best quality if compared with hp epson canon etc…and also a great speed of print

    1. John M

      Hi Lesley,

Thanks for joining the discussion. I believe your opinion is subjective. I think most of the printers in this price range delivers similar performance and print quality. Do you have any proof to support your argument?

      1. Prof Raghuveer Vernekar

John: I see that you are well informed person on the subject – with clrity and rationaile for your views in place

IF I MAY SEEK A FAVOUR:

I have used Epson long ago, and was with a HP inkjet for some years. Something seems to have gone wrong and I was using it with just black cartridge. They tell me that I shall have to send around 1400 for some arts. With carteidges, it goes double. So I though I shall instead get a new printer.

I checked and had shortlisted Canon Pixma E 4270. Duplex pprinting, WiFi & ADF tilted my shortlist. But then the projected cost of the prints is rather high. We just have had a grandson born in CA-USA; and we keep receiving photoes everyday. That’s tthe major printing we shall need. apart from sundry ones. The local vendor suggested that I go for Epson E4270 (ink tank) I was then checking the net review and camee accross your well innformed articulations. Becausr of your reference, I checked for Brother Prinnters (on the net) and true to your assertion they seem be be better. However one informed gentleman told me today that Brother may give service problem here (Goa), whereas Epson has better service network – in fact they come and attend at your place (so he says!).

Would you please apprise me what to go in for? Brother DCP T510, Brother DCP T220, Canon E 4270 or anything else closer to that price range and good value for money?
